Definition: Test Statistic

Definition 1 (Complete AZ Mathematics Handbook):

In hypothesis testing, the test statistic is a statistic (number) on which the decision to accept or reject the null hypothesis is based.  For example, in the chi squared \left(\chi^2\right) test, if the calculated test statistic is greater than the critical value of the test, then the null hypothesis is rejected in favour of the alternative hypothesis.
